What does an elephant symbolize?

Monk standing with an elephant

In Thailand, elephants are sacred animals in Buddhism and symbolize good luck, prosperity, and endurance.

Riding on the back of an elephant in Thailand is the ultimate bucket list experience for many people. Historically, people used elephants for work and war in Thailand. Spiritually, Buddhism portrays elephants as sacred animals. And culturally, elephants symbolize good luck, prosperity and endurance.

The elephant is the largest land mammal on our planet, and they are secretive and keep its distance from other animals. Elephants spend most of the day eating and drinking about 150 litres of water daily.

There were over 100,000 elephants in Thailand at the start of the previous century. Today there are only 3,000-4,000 elephants left in Thailand amidst a global population estimated as low as 30,000.

Fortunately, a small but growing number of elephant refuge centres in Thailand employ more sustainable methods to keep tourists, elephants, and their mahouts happy.

Our Tapestry

Sirius Health is proud to own a beautiful Kalaga Tapestry from the Mae Sai district of Chaing Mai province, depicting an elephant parade. The elephant is the most common image you will see when you visit Northern Thailand.

We hope this tapestry will inspire our customers before and after their treatments, so we have hung the elephant tapestry in the Bamboo Room, our changing room.
