What does a dragon symbolize?
Dragons have long been associated with power, creativity, heaven, and good fortune. Thai culture also believes that dragons have authority over bodies of water, rain, floods, and storms.
Dragons in Thailand have nine parts, each associated with different animals on earth. The head is that of a chameleon, the scales of carp fish, the horns of a giant stag, the eyes of a hare, the ears of the water buffalo, the neck of a snake, the belly of a clam, the paws of a tiger and the claws of an eagle. Culturally, dragons are associated with wisdom, power, creativity and good fortune.
In Thailand, statues of dragons adorn the roofs and gates of temples, and images of dragons are displayed on the walls, serving as guardians and symbolizing the dragon’s power of clarity. Buddhist dragons are often depicted holding a mani jewel, which represents the Buddha’s teaching.
